MAY's House Of Soon Kueh is named after Mr Sun Min Seng's
wife Miss Han Ah May. They started off 4 to 5 years ago with
nothing in hand but a creative mind. The rest of it, according
to Mr. Sun is
purely hard work. Today, this little business has franchised over 10
stalls at different area of Singapore.
In 1997-1998, the economic crisis fell upon Asia, and Mr Sun
was one of the victims of this crisis. He went around looking
for a job but to no avail. Mr Sun whose father was a
Shanghainese
|
|
| got an idea from a famous Shanghainese
snack, guo
tie and together with Mrs Sun, whose homemade soon kueh has won
many praises, they came up with their own homemade
recipe for soon kueh.
|
|
Their first stall was at Geylang Bahru. At that time
their menu only comprised Soon Kueh, Zhu Chang Fen (Hong Kong Style)
and Peanut Porridge. Even so, their soon kueh kept their customers coming back for
more.
Their business boomed when the word of mouth
spread around. Mr and Mrs Sun had to wake up
every morning at 5am in the morning, and they
worked till 7pm when
their shop closes. But
|
|
|
|
their work did not stop there as they had to prepare for the
ingredients for the next morning. For a year, they
hardly slept more than 5 hours a day. |
When the numbers of customers became overwhelming, they hired
more workers. They also began delivery service for the convenience
of their customers.
There was once when AIA required 5000 pieces of soon
kueh for a meeting which was to be
|
|
held the next
day! Other stalls were unable to produce such large amount of soon kuehs within such
a short period of time yet Mr Sun has accepted the
order. His policy has always been:
"If the others can do it, so can I.
Even if the others can't do it, I must be able to do it."
Working through the night, they successfully delivered
the order to AIA. Without any sleep the night before, they
nonetheless carried on with their daily business as usual. Since the
starting of their little business at Geylang Bahru, they
had franchised to 10 areas in Singapore within a short
span of 4-5 years.
|
As their customers
base grew, so did their business and
workers. Mr and Mrs Sun, and all their workers, have kept
to their principles of
maintaining a clean
and hygienic environment and offering their
customers products which use the freshest ingredient. In
addition, they ensure that every
one of their soon kueh is handmade and just that
keeps their customers coming back.
