Some History
The Botanic Gardens was founded in 1822 by the founder of Singapore,
Sir Stamford Raffles who was a keen naturalist. The location of the Garden
then was at Government Hill at Fort Canning with the sole purpose of introducing the
cultivation of economic crops such as nutmeg, clove and cocoa.
The Garden closed in 1829.
The Garden was re-founded in 1859 and moved to its present site by
Agri-Horticultural Society
and was later handed over to the Government for maintenance. It started from being an ornamental
garden with roads, terraces, bandstand and even a tiny zoo then to become the leading equatorial
botanic garden of 52 hectares we have now.
The Botanic Gardens we have today is about 139 years old, but still stays as a star attraction for visitors
as well as local residents. The Garden contains a rich history of botanical and
horticultural attractions
as well as a worldwide collection of wonderful plants. Educational and recreational
facilities within Botanic Gardens also complement the unique resources collected.
